Turning Point: The Stack (4/5)

Turning Point: The Stack (4/5)

One turning point leads to another one. They stack. That’s why I say, “You’re either in a turning point or approaching one.”

A child grows into a single adult. A single adult falls in love and gets married. A married couple start a family. A family loses one of its members. All stages of life defined by turning points.

Your life is the same. For instance, your career follows a stack that begins with your first job as an individual contributor. Often, consistent success as an individual contributor leads to a promotion to a supervisor / manager. A successful stint as a manager leads to a promotion as a manager of managers. Success at this level and you become an executive. Every stage of your career marked by turning points.

Jesus’ disciples were the same. For example, Peter was a nice Jewish boy growing up in the faith of his family. Then Jesus came along and said, “Follow me.” At that point, Peter turned from the faith of his family and became a follower of Jesus. When Jesus went to the Cross, Peter turned from a follower to an apostle (sent one) responsible to grow Jesus’ Kingdom.

Your spiritual journey probably followed similar lines. You grew up in the faith of your family. Then you heard the good news about Jesus and decided to become a Christian. You got baptized, learned to pray, started reading the Bible, and joined a faith community. At some point in your development, you felt the call to do more than follow and volunteered to contribute, to serve, to lead and take responsibility. Every turn required a change in your relationships, your skills, and how you spend your time.

Understanding which turning point you’re in or approaching helps you to focus on those things that will make the greatest impact on your life. I have found that a comparison of relationships, skills, and time allocations gives you insight on how to be successful in the turn.

Identify the turning point you’re in and the one you’re approaching:

From one turning point to the next, what new relationships will you establish? Who are you responsible for? Who are you accountable to?
Compare the skills you have developed with the specific skills you will need to rely upon. How will you learn these skills? Who can coach you through them?
Think on how you will use your time. What tasks depend on you? What tasks must you entrust to others?

Tomorrow: failure to turn
